About Maze Painter

A free sliding-ball puzzle game you can play in your browser or install to your phone. Roll the ball, paint every tile, and find the shortest route through more than 700 levels.

The idea

Maze Painter grew out of a simple question: what if a sliding puzzle left a trail? In most sliding-block games the goal is to reach a spot. Here the goal is to cover every floor tile with paint. The ball rolls in straight lines until something stops it, so every move commits you to a whole run of tiles at once. Planning the order of those runs is the entire game, and it turns out to be surprisingly deep.

The first hundred or so levels teach the language: walls, dead ends, the moment you realise a tile can only be reached from one side. After that the board starts to fight back with mechanics of its own.

What makes it different

  • Corner arrows bend a rolling ball ninety degrees without stopping it, so one swipe can trace a winding path across the board.
  • Portals link two tiles. Roll into one and you come out of the other, still moving, which lets levels fold back on themselves.
  • Traps catch the ball and cost you a move to escape. Sometimes they are the only way to stop where you need to.
  • Multiplier pads split the ball into two or three that move together. Every copy paints, and every copy can get stuck.
  • Pressure buttons open and close parts of the board while you play, so the maze changes under you.

Every level was built and solved by hand, then checked by the game itself, so each one has a known best solution. Beat that par and you earn extra stars.

Stars, balls and boards

Finishing a level earns stars, more for finishing in fewer moves. Stars buy cosmetic ball skins and board themes in the in-game shop, from a glossy gold sphere to marbles, planets and a bowling ball, and from the default twilight purples to ocean, forest, candy and lava boards. None of it changes how the game plays. There are no paid items, no energy timers and no adverts inside the puzzle itself.

Free, and playable anywhere

Maze Painter runs entirely in the browser with no download and no account. Your progress is kept in a small secure cookie on the device you play on. On a phone you can add the game to your home screen and it opens full screen like a native app, with the controls tuned for swiping. On a desktop, drag with the mouse or use the arrow keys.

The site is supported by a single advertisement banner shown outside the play area. You can read about how that works in our privacy policy.

Who makes it

Maze Painter is an independent project by a very small team that enjoys tidy puzzles and tidy code. New levels, mechanics and cosmetics are added over time, and player feedback shapes what comes next. If you have found a level with a shortcut we missed, or simply want to say hello, the contact page is the place.
